The dithering pattern this shader utilizes is based on PS1's (x/diamond shaped patterns). On N64 is two rows (kind of an exaggerated example, most of the time it's subtle on official games). By two rows I mean each is 2 pixels high - fitting in the 4 pixels high texture of this shader, for whatever reason one of the rows has a notorious contrast while the other is almost completely flat (again, accurate with what an actual N64 does).
