Because I had never seen them before and I thought this was open source software.

There has been one on the right of the menu for ~2 years.

I don't get the relationship you do between ads and open source, Open Source does not forbid ads.

Right, I forgot about Winx, or whatever, button because it was barely noticeable. That's not the same with an ad blocking half the screen, is it? You think people would be ok if VLC started doing the same?

This place was empty before the ad.
There is a "X" on the top right for closing it (it won't reappear quickly), checking the sheet view we see that the "X" is badly placed (not the case of the basic view), we'll change that for the "X" being nearer from the ad.
And again, donors, even $1 donors, don't see it.

You think people would be ok if VLC started doing the same?

I don't see what VLC does here, we are not publishing VLC + this is the choice of VLC developers to do it or not, and VLC users to leave or not (with an impact on VLC developers... or no impact at all).

@JeromeMartinez I think the ad may be too big and there is too much white space above/below it.

It is a mistake on our side with a difference between the aspect ratio of the ad we were using in QA and the one in production so we didn't well spot the issue, we'll place the ad at the bottom on the UI.
