The deadline for pre-proposals is today (see https://www.mdanalysis.org/2025/02/28/gsoc2025/#submit-a-pre-proposal ) so if you want to keep your options open you'll have to submit one.

For Project 1 some of the key skills are being able to use Python to write a frontend UI and being able to use multiprocessing. As with all our projects, having familiarity with molecular simulations is an advantage — MDAnalysis and WESTPA are specialized scientific software. At a minimum you should do the first steps outlined in our blog post.
