Focus area: Infrastructure

Copied from the First pre-event meeting, this discussion is to establish a knowledge-base in the area of RDM Infrastructure and concepts related to the MADICES-2024 workshop:

• RDF seems to be, conceptually, the way to facilitate the exchange of data.
• The details of the implementation of the RDF models (i.e. XML vs JSON-LD) need to be agreed upon.
• We should be building on what's already implemented in the RDM tools which support flavours of RDF.
• Not everyone should have to be an RDF expert: we need to build an "API" that allows end-users not to worry about RDF.

Similar to MADICES1 I would love to see examples where I actually need an ontology and where a controlled vocabulary is not enough. I can still see and support the long-term vision, but I haven't yet seen very may concrete use cases.

I guess a relevant tool to discuss would be LinkML https://github.com/linkml/linkml.

I would also put data shapes/schemas before vocabularies, but support lazy annotation with vocabs in the shapes/schemas. Some go for SHACL, but this is not a lazy annotation at all. LinkML is a great approach, but since tooling around JSON-SCHEMA is superior and it is one of the most popular schema languages we came up with a JSON-SCHEMA extension blended with JSON-LD to generate object-oriented code, RDF and graphical userinterfaces (this is were LinkML is currently limited) from a single definition.
