AWS lambda JSON format logging and escaped JSON string

Problem:

• TEXT format logging in aws lambda does not work for us out of box because each log line is prepended with a requestId, timestamp, level.
• We switched to JSON format but now the msg gets escaped and we loose the pretty JSON. It prints something like this

 "\"msg\": {\"id\":103,\"content\":\"fred\"}"

Any idea how to get around this
