Zigbee2Mqtt keeps reverting configuration.yaml to invalid one

I just updated to the latest zigbee2mqtt docker image so it should be 2.xx
I previously had 1.xx

I changed my configuration to

frontend:
  enabled: true
  package: zigbee2mqtt-windfront

I also tried without windfront

for some reason the configuration.yaml keeps reverting on start to
frontend: true

and I am getting error

Zigbee2MQTT configuration is not valid
Found the following errors:
- frontend must be object

For windfront you need to use zigbee2mqtt 2.4.0, 1.x wont work

For 1.x the config is frontend: true

I know that is not the issue; something is happening when you are on 1.xx and changing to latest so 2.xx the configuration file keeps reverting to the wrong syntax

Do you change the configuration while Zigbee2MQTT is running ? Won't work. You need to stop Zigbee2MQTT, make changes to configuration.yaml and start Zigbee2MQTT again.
