Undo/Remove characters placed with drawText?

I'm trying to build a simple editor where you can place text over a PDF, I call drawText, then save so I can show a preview

Is there a way to remove the text easily afterwards or should I be storing a 2nd copy and re-rendering as needed? Thanks!
