AG front page design

Each AG has to maintain it's own description in some way. For the network's front page we use a separate static page which is loaded into the network's front page.
Here, we want to avoid loading a static page using a magic id. With a separate page template (theme sub folder templates/) any static page can be set to look and behave as an AG front page. Which page is used in the end can be customized in the backend.

As it turned out, the file front-page.php will be used (if existing) to render the front page regardless whether it is set to be a static page or not. A Wordpress codex page explains the setup we are aiming for. We need a static front page which will be served via template front-page.php, and another empty static page having a useful URL (like "blog", "posts", ...) which will be served via home.php or index.php. In the latter case, "served" means that the regular posts loop will be run through the template.
