Clarification on the “Other” Variable in ActiPASS #116
-
Dear ActiPASS support team, I’m writing to kindly ask for clarification regarding the “Other” variable in the ActiPASS software. In ActiPASS Version Variable Definitions document, this variable is described as “activities such as…”, which seem to include exercise activities. Could you please clarify the following:

Hi, Anyway, from an algorithm perspective, there is no such distinct class of activities called "exercise activities". Algorithm wise, all that can be known by accelerometery is position of the sensor with respect to the line of gravity and features of its movements. This is true even for very sophisticated machine learning algorithms. Think "other" as any activity which happens with a horizontal thigh position (i.e. we don’t know the actual activity). One more thing, if an answer helps you, please accept it as the answer so others would benefit from that. Kind regards |

Hi,
The variable "other" is all "activities" (i.e. movements above sitting/standing thresholds) with thigh in more or less horizontal position. Such activities normally include certain gym equipment, rowing a boat/kayak etc. If periodicity is detected in such "Other" activities, ActiPASS intensity variables will also further process "Other" activities into different intensity classes based on the cadence (See intensity variable definitions). Be aware that, when individual calibration is poor (automatic reference positions are not good), normal upright activities could be classed as "other" in rare situations. Furthermore, certain vehicle operations can also be classified as "other"; for a…
