Ability to write files using PHP? Permissions?

I'm trying to write files using file_put_contents() but it's not working for me.

I'm way out of practice here so I'd advise a short sample or advice to write files to the current folder of an EE PHP site.

I did this, probably overkill but it worked

1. backup site
2. fix permissions of backup locally
3. delete site
4. create site
5. upload fixed backup
6. sudo ee shell mysite.com
7. restore backup
8. now it works
