I'm a little confused on how this works please help!

So I'm not too sure fully on what does what, for example, is login mode for those like me who know the password to the account and simply do not have access to auth/backup codes? Is reset mode for those who don't know the password at all? If so if I use login mode to I ignore the bottom part of the script relating to authentication codes? Can there be a little more clarification on how it works?

yes you have it correct.
login mode is for if you know your password,
reset mode is for if you don't know your password but sent a password reset (or if discord is forcing you to reset the account password for whatever reason, i.e what happened to me)
