Padding applying to text boxes bounding box

Padding around text will often be start from the text box edge rather than the text itself. Is there any way around this other than setting line height?

In the example below, 5px padding has been applied to all edges but the reality is 9px on top

I'm not sure there is anything paddy could detect, beyond line height, unless the characters were outlined.

You could have two different symbols with different line heights, one for descender, one for baseline.
