Community-Driven Funding for Open Source in Climate & Sustainability

The OpenSustain·tech and Ecosyste·ms team has launched OpenClimate.fund, a community-driven initiative to support open source projects that address climate change and biodiversity loss. They're starting with 10,000€ to support 100 projects with 100€ each. This could be useful for small-scale DPGs and you can learn more from the announcement blog post. Cheers!

Interesting.. It's not a lot of $$. I do wonder if they would have made a bigger impact with 10 projects with 1000€ each? Being 1/10 is a lot more newsworthy than 1/100. Also it is a lot of work to evaluate 100 projects or for that matter to give them all $100. It might cost more for some projects than they would get.

Good points @mgifford! I guess the Open Climate Fund focused more on smaller-scale independent projects that will still benefit from the 100€, specifically those that accept donations through known platforms like Open Source Collective or GitHub Sponsors. From the announcement, they seem to have a working system for evaluation and donation that works for them. I'm keen to see how the program evolves in the next round they're planning. Do feel free to share these thoughts with them, too! I'm sure they'd appreciate it as they evolve the fund and welcome new partners.
