UMIL User Terminology

🎉 We're happy to share some locked in terminology for UMIL user roles!

🔔 Further terminology will be set in stone, but this is what has been decided on for these roles in the submission, verification, and approval userflow/pipeline for objects to end up on Wikidata.

Viewer

• Most basic
• View capability only
• Can only view public pages

Contributor

• Has UMIL account
• Can submit new instrument labels/aliases
• Can submit new images
• Can submit new instruments
• Cannot edit items outside of their own
• Can only view public pages

Reviewer

• Has UMIL account
• Has Django access (staff)
• Has Contributor powers
• Can edit status of an inject
• Verifies and investigates contributed items (or rejects them)

Editor

• Has a UMIL account
• Has (full) Django access (superuser)
• Has all Reviewer powers
• Can delete
• Can submit to Wikidata

Three questions:

• A viewer is someone not logged in? In other words, not a user?
• For contributor, what do you mean by "cannot edit items outside of their own". What is an "item" in this case? And what does it mean to "own" it?
• Why would a reviewer not be able to delete and submit to wikidata?

• Yes a viewer is someone without an account: not a user.
• Contributor items refer to new instrument names.
• When we upload to Wikidata, we want to tightly track who is making those changes. Reviewer users allow us to have individuals that validate the new data without increasing the amount of users with permissions to change anything.
