Lock out margins while click-dragging text

If the end of a text row is close to a margin, attempting to click-drag to select text may drag that margin instead. (see cursor next to highlighted right-margin).

Ideally a margin-lock option may help.

The hitbox for the handle bars is intentionally wider then the vertical line of pixels in order to make the handle bars easy to grab via touch screen. The best I can do is dynamically disable the hitbox for the right handlebar while this will bit result in a drag because the editable area is at 100% width.

I could also offset the hitbox more towards the corners, but I'd rather not do that because then it would prevent interactions with the gestures that open sidebars.

I understand why have a margin lockout option, but I worry that it would make an already difficult to discover feature even harder to discover.

Could a key/mouse option like Alt-drag work for the margins?

It could work. The handles would make themselves dragable only while Alt or Ctrl is being held.

How this change is implemented is key because we don't want to loose the ability to change the mouse cursor while it is placed on top of the handles as that is what allows for the feature to be discoverable. This means the handle cannot be deactivated, instead the click event would be ignored, so that it passes through to the editor behind it.

Some text, icon or animation should be present to tell the user to press Alt or Ctrl if they wish to move the handle... Maybe the handle itself could contain a Ctrl button in its icon.

This behavior would only be active if Kirigami's mobile property isn't set. That would eliminate the need to press hold the modifier key when the app is used on a phone instead of a PC.

Perhaps the key combination could only change the width of the hotspot from say 1px to wider when pressed?

That wouldn't work because of the imprecision of fingers and touch screens. It would make the initial action too difficult. The extra width is there only for initial action detection. Dragging detection is independent and is done by measuring the distance from where the pressing was initialized.

Can the hotspots be limited to the very top or bottom of the margins?

No because the handle bars extend for the height of the script and are a part of the UI elements that are scrolled.

I mean, there's always a way to pull things off, but it would be complicated solution that adds more computation while scrolling, which I consider unnecessary.

It appears the only option is to click before the end of a long text row, arrow the cursor to the end then shift-arrow to select text...
