Keyboard shortcut to create an empty line with a blank bookmark

Possibly the same color as the background to render 'invisible'?

They have to. Otherwise it interferes with the highlight. That's why bookmarks combine overline and underline for formatting.

That said, bookmarks need to contain some text in order for them to display a preview in the sidebar. Since a new line has no text what I was thinking is make a bookmark creation mode, where everything you type is a bookmark until you relocate the cursor or create a new line the normal way.

How about a preset that allows the user to insert say, a few spaces that are bookmarked?

That could be a source for confusion... There needs to be some sort of indicator that they're creating a bookmark.

Either that or bookmarks need to become block elements. That is: take up the entire width, like headings.

We could also have headings that behave like bookmarks and bookmarks as we know them at the same time.

If the user could create one bookmark like above, then find and replace some or all carriage returns with it?

If they did that the line following the heading-bookmark would become a part of the heading-bookmark.

If done for the line preceding the bookmark, the heading-bookmark itself would disappear.

Even if including a carriage return in the copied text?

If there's a \n in the replacement text one of two things might happen:

1. It's not parsed and treated as two characters.
2. The \n is added to the end of the heading-bookmark block, effectively creating two heading-bookmarks, one after the other.

I'm describing how HTML usually behaves, since that's the format the text editor is based upon. There might be some differences in Qt's implementation, and we can always override things, tho it isn't always a good idea to.
