How to make ` ` work?

So I have a data table with Text fields that I was to display. The Editor (4.27.2) doesn't seem to have an easy way to make newlines/line breaks, so I was trying to make a style for a block that would do this. I have a default and * bold set up, but no matter how I try to get this working I can't seem to get it to.
Does a block style require newlines to work or what's up with this?

Ok, so I made a workaround function that pre-processes my texts, but I would love to know if there is a "right" way to do this where I don't to do this:

For the record, after I use that pre-processor I am able to get blocks working by putting 2  s directly before it and after that line would be done.
