How to flatten operation body

According to https://azure.github.io/autorest/extensions/#x-ms-client-flatten, we can add x-ms-client-flatten to operation body. What's more, here is a real case from resourceconnector: https://github.com/Azure/azure-rest-api-specs/blob/2bb0ac9bfa9d495e6957972c4a5db5103beb5804/specification/resourceconnector/resource-manager/Microsoft.ResourceConnector/stable/2022-10-27/appliances.json#L365. What would it even mean to flatten the body parameter? In the cited case, how is this different than flattening 'patchableAppliance`?

But how does this have anything to do with 'flattening', which is just the 'properties' property in resources being flattened into the resource envelope? There is no 'properties' property in PatchableAppliance. What is flattening actually doing in this case?
