Everforest, how to adjust

I'm loving Everforest, but am having a hard time tweeking some things.

For example I had to add this:

 vim.g.everforest_colors_override = { bg_dim = { "#2d353b", "233" } }
vim.g.everforest_background = "hard"

to the very top of astroui.lua in order for it to work. Is there a better place to put it?

Also, how can I get ALL elements in neovim to have the same background color:

In the image above, Neotree is darker than the buffer.

Is this a Neotree issue or adjustment needed on Everforest?
