You can look into Let's Encrypt, they provide free Certificates, you only must verfify that you own the site by temporarely uploading a webpage.
There is also a certbot which does everything automatically. The only downside is, that those certificates have a shorter valid timespan, i think it was three months, but the certbot could be automated to renew this.
The major browsers trust the Lets Encrypt CA and you wont get any warnings about an self signed or unknown certificate.

I am not sure if this is the right place, but as i use "HTTPS everywhere" your doc site appeared always offline for me. As there is also no https to http redirect (if even possible).
