When printing on white PLA, I used a Sharpie pen to write the % on the top surfaces and found the extent (or lack thereof) that the ink bleeds into the grooves seemed to show the best smoothness (i.e. lack of grooves or ridges).
On the ideal EM setting, the Sharpie ink hardly runs at all.
Obviously it won't work with dark colours but for lighter ones, this could be an easy help and a suggested method of judging the correct print.
