What is the dot in front of some completions?

When I'm in my homedir and have set zstyle ":completion:*:descriptions" format "%d" (or any format string), dots show up before the completions and it's driving me crazy.
I assumed I'd messed something up, but I was looking through the issues to see if anyone had run into it before and saw a ton of screenshots like it, so I assume it's the correct behavior?

Why is there, and can I turn it off?

It's the prefix. Use this to get rid of it:

zstyle ':fzf-tab:*' prefix ''
