Not able to build using `gradle 7.x`

We started testing out the react-native plugin that uses this library under the hood. We ran into an issue where we could not build the project and got an error similar to this.

* What went wrong:
A problem occurred evaluating project ':react-native-flic2'.
> Plugin with id 'maven' not found.

Raised an issue here. What could be the problem and is there any workaround for this?

in combination with https://docs.gradle.org/7.0/userguide/upgrading_version_6.html#removal_of_the_legacy_maven_plugin

Hmm but we already use maven-publish and not maven?

That was what I thought as well. Not able to figure out where the issue lies exactly maybe @jdegger could shed some light here
